On Saturday June 2, Te Kohanga commenced the 2007 Maori language and culture program at the Brisbane Youth Detention Centre. The Takahia Whakamua Puutahi program (the ‘stepping forward from the crossroads together’ program) celebrated its tenth anniversary last year. Our first class for this year was awesome – we have 18 young people attending and they all showed lots of enthusiasm for learning all about the Maori culture. See below for a couple of photos of the Kohanga team of kaiako (teachers), kuia & kaumatua (elders) and Kohanga committee members that make the program possible. The photos were taken in the reception area at the youth detention centre.
