Matariki at Saturday Tamariki Kohanga

Our Saturday Tamariki program recently celebrated Matariki with a full days wananga and a special after hours activity.

Matariki – a celebration of the Maori new year – is a time for renewal, rebirth, gardening, growing and learning. At our kohanga for matariki we planted new garden beds; practised mau rakau; learnt some new waiata – especially waiata about matariki as well as spent time together as whanau. And we had some manuhiri from the Brisbane Astronomical Socity come out with their telescopes so that we could watch the nightsky and see matarkiki, Saturn and other planets and constellations.

Our tamariki and whanau had a great time learning new things and planting new seeds for our new year. And we also enjoyed meeting with the BAS team of Andy, Robert and Gemmel who gave of their time, energy and telescopes for our tamariki. Kia ora guys!
